Sloped Yard Landscaping Ideas for Elmhurst, IL
Do you feel unsure of how to landscape your sloped yard? Do your walkways seem awkward and unbalanced due to varying elevation levels? If so, we’d like to offer a few ideas for how you can reduce standing water and overcome slopes in your backyard with smart landscaping solutions. In this blog post, we will explore a recent custom Elmhurst landscape design project that tackled the challenge of two elevation levels and a sloped yard, transforming it into a stunning outdoor oasis.
Our client wanted a more functional entertaining space with plenty of seating area and a grill pad, while also raising the aesthetics of the backyard. Unfortunately, they were challenged with two distinct elevation levels, a walkway that was too narrow and an aging patio. Ross and Jack’s Landscaping goal was to give them a modern landscape design transformation that would enhance both form and function, while also managing the sloped yard issues.
Retaining Walls for Function and Beauty
One of the first solutions we implemented during the landscaping process was a retaining wall to address the slope and elevation of their property. Some of the benefits of constructing a retaining wall are to prevent soil erosion, stabilize the terrain and create defined spaces within the hardscaping.
Wider Walkway & Steps for Safe, Effortless Flow
Another problem that needed to be addressed was the narrow walkway and steps. The walkway was not a standard size and the small steps made it potentially hazardous. We replaced the dated concrete with a much wider, far more beautiful walkway and steps made with hand-cut, hand-laid natural stone steps to match the patio. The new spacious walkway and steps not only improved functionality but also created a more inviting flow from the house to the backyard.
The Custom Grill Pad
Just off the new backyard steps and walkway, we designed a dedicated grill area. This custom-built grill pad provided a designated spot for cooking outdoors that was conveniently located right off the kitchen. This ensured easy access and functionality for backyard barbecues.
The new grill pad also helped preserve more living space to accommodate more guests by not taking up valuable patio space for the grill. This design transformed the grill pad into an outdoor focal point and meal prep space.
The Entertainment Patio
We then built a stable, level patio that was slope-free, giving them a balanced pavement for dining and unwinding. The stone paver patio area provided our clients a larger, more sophisticated space for entertaining and relaxing outdoors. When the weather is nice, the family can enjoy meals outdoors and host gatherings with ease.
Plant Beds and Drainage Solutions
But a functional space isn't always the most aesthetically pleasing. To soften the design and add pops of color and texture, outcropping stone and plant beds were strategically added throughout the hardscaping. These beds served two important functions: beauty and drainage.
The slope of the yard meant proper drainage was key to prevent standing water and potential foundation issues. By installing plant beds, we not only created a visually appealing contrast to the hardscaping but also ensured proper water flow away from the house and patio.
