In the early 1950s, the property that now encompasses Eldridge Park was deemed unusable due to its swampy nature and was repurposed as a landfill. However, recognizing the potential of the land, the Park District took action, purchasing 33 acres on the east side of Salt Creek in 1956. This marked the first step towards the development of Eldridge Park.

The transformation of the park began in 1960 when the initial stages of development took place. Two years later, in 1962, additional land on the west side of Salt Creek was acquired, expanding the park's footprint. To further enhance the park's size and offerings, several lots were purchased from the City in 1961, 1962, and 1970, allowing for more recreational opportunities.
